New Delhi: Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), India’s top ranked engineering and technology institutes, have taken a decision to provide students who are academically week an option to exit a course after six semesters rather than dropping out.
Academically weak students, who are not able to secure the required credits for promotion to the next semester may be allowed an exit option with a degree programmeafter second semester, rather than being forced out of the programme. Individual IITswill decide modalities for this. They will be awarded a B Sc after completing three years.
As per the 53rd Council of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) meeting at IIT Delhi held today, underperforming students may be allowed an exit optionwith a degree programmeafter second semester,rather than being forced out of the programme. However, the press release issued by Ministry of HRD said that Individual IITswill decide modalities for this.
The meeting 53rd Council of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) was chaired by Union HRD Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank.
As per the date shared by the HRD Ministry in Parliament recently, 2,461 students dropped out of different IITs in the last two years across BTech and post-graduate programmes. These include cases of expulsion on account of weak academic performance.
Approximately 9 lakh students appear each cycle of the JEE (main) that’s held twice a year. Meanwhile, the total seats in all 23 IITs for various BTech courses is 13,500.
Currently IITs offer BTech courses with four year having 8 eight semester.
